Imagine just finishing up a 70’s set with “Sister Golden Hair” by America (133 Bpms) and somebody shouts out from the dance floor “Hey DJ you got anything new?”—You look at your copy of “The Music Doctor’s Master Mixing BPM Song Catalogue” and blend right out of America into “Believe” by Cher (Promo Only December 1998 Rhythm Radio) or maybe “Look At Us” by Sarina Paris (January 2001Promo Only Modern Radio); Stranger In My House by Tamia; (Mar 2001 Rhythm Radio) or Who’s Crying Now? By Karmadelic (Jan 2002 Rhythm Radio) Baliando by Loona (Jul1999 Rhythm Radio) Get The Party Started by Pink (Housemix) (Dec 2001 Rhythm Radio); We Like To Party by The Vengaboys (January 1999 Promo Only Modern Radio) ---the mixes are endless!
Or, perhaps someone wants an “Old School/ Disco” tune how about mixing in (one beat faster) “Shake Your Groove Thing” by Peaches & Herb (134 Bpms) Let Me Take You Dancing (134 Bpm) By Bryan Adams; or Boogie Fever (remix) (134 Bpm) by The Sylvers… It goes perfect! There are over 50,000 possible mixes and mix combinations in this marvelous BPM Catalogue.
Did you know that at 184 BPM’s “Tenderness” by General Public will mix with “The Ketchup Song”-by Las Ketchup; “I’m so Excited”-The Pointer Sisters or “Karma Chameleon”—Culture Club “Modern Love”—David Bowie; “Twisting By The Pool”—Dire Straits; or even “Bandstand Boogie”—By Barry Manilow…like I said, the mixes are endless!
The
research for the information actually spans 18 years of Nightclub and Mobile
DJing. I was fascinated with mixing in the late 70's. I think one of my first mix sets was "San Francisco by the
Village People with "Fight The Power” by the Isley Brothers then,
"After Dark" by Pattie Brooks with”Cocomotion” by El CoCo. Then After
a slow song on to "Bad Mama Jama”by Carl Carlton with “Best of My Love” by
The Emotions to "Car Wash" by Rose Royce then “Ain’t
Gonna Bump No More- by Joe Tex to slamming YMCA by The Village People (for the effect not mix) to “Devil’s
Gun” by Cj & Company to “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps to "Born To Be
Alive" by Patrick Hernandez, followed by "Contact” by Edwin Star ect.
All in the late 70’s
I
was working nightclubs in Los Angeles. Later on a company out of New York
called "Dance Beats" started advertising a BPM Book called
"Dance Beats" and it was filled with songs. Hundreds actually
thousands! Many of which I would never use in a nightclub. However, many of
which I would use as a wedding DJ.
At the time of printing, "Dance Beats" could only use a turntable to
count beats. According to their 'Foreword’...they used Technique 1200’s. They
were the same kind of turntables I was using at the time at “Bootleggers”
nightclub in La. So I learned to count my own beats for new songs. After a
while longer I came in contact with CORE Music BPM Books. They claim to have
counted all the beats per minute by hand. So I ordered some of their books to
compare with what I already had. I found some gaps and a number of differences
in what they reported as the actual BPM**. More time went by and I came upon a
"Beatkeeper" and quess what the story was there? That's right a different
BPM than the other two. But, the one thing I noticed was that I had to
buy 10 different books for different music genres.
That's when the idea struck me to design a BPM book with an all genre "At
A Glance" format.
I
basically made one just for me. It took me two years to complete it. But
by January 2002 I had it done. So I took a few copies of it to my DJ
friends locally and they used it for a few parties and claimed they had kept
the entire floor full all night. Some actually called me from the event
to leave me a message on my answering machine telling me what they
just mixed! I could hear the party in the background. They were jazzed! So, I
decided to take it on the road, to The Mobile Beat DJ Show In Las Vegas 2002. I
only took about 16 copies. Just to test the market.
Everyone who looked at it bought it for
$29.95 (Introductory offer). That was before I added 250 more rock songs; 200
Big Band Songs; and updated all the Promo Only
Rhythm Radio and Mainstream Radio through September 2002
While not every beat will match with every beat keeping device I am confident
that a DJ can and will become one of his town's best musicologist's with this
wonderful tool.
Just a footnote: If you compare the Bpms from "Promo Only" with the
same songs of "Hot Hits" you will find some differences. Therefore, I
stand behind “The Music Doctor's
Master Music Mixing BPM Song Catalog”
The idea behind The Music
Doctor's Master Music Mixing BPM Song Catalog is to blend or mix a 'party' of unique dance hits. Furthermore, the
50's "60's & 70's while are perfect for Birthdays, Reunions and
Anniversaries, they also make great samples for back ground... For example,
during "Shook Me All Night Long" sample in "Louie Louie" or
Manfred Mann’s “Do Wha Ditty”...the prospects are endless. I don't believe
anyone will realize it's full potential until many months after purchase. I
ALSO RECOMMEND setting up a few 'sets' before an event. Maybe anticipate
a few new requests and then plan to insert some 1980's and Disco ect. Or visa
versa.
But, what about "Harmonic Mixing"? You may ask. I am a big
fan of that I will be happy to recommend harmonic mixing to everyone. Some are of the opinion, that too much harmonic
mixing limits a DJ's creativity. "I Love The Night Life" by Alicia
Bridges followed by "Do Wha Ditty" by Manfred Mann hardly
harmonizes--but the crowds go nuts! Or "I Love The Night Life" by
Alicia Bridges followed by Stuck In The Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheels....
BE DARING!!!
